Body art is an expressive way to represent your personality. As a result, the body art industry is booming, with an estimated 30% of people in the United States having at least one tattoo. Some are big and bold, while others are small and discreet. These permanent art pieces tell a story, hold memories, or harbor dreams and hopes. Top tattoo artist Ben Shaw adds that tattoos also strengthen your pain tolerance, increasing your capacity to take more of life’s painful moments. For others, it helps to face and overcome fear, allowing you to get to the next level of greatness.
That said, there are a lot of horror stories out there about people who have contracted nasty infections from tattoos at some sketchy places. Some tattoo artists do not use safe practices when it comes to needles that carry blood-borne pathogens into their clients’ skins, exposing them to severe infections like hepatitis C and HIV. Local jurisdictions across the US have implemented regulations to safeguard tattoo recipients to curb that and prevent things like that from happening again. The extent of regulation varies significantly from state to state, with some adopting stringent laws and others being lax in their requirements.
As a tattoo artist and industry advocate, Ben Shaw believes all stakeholders should be involved in formulating laws and regulations governing body art. “I have a passion for proper regulation. Unfortunately, so many within the tattoo industry have zero desire to learn or participate in regulations and law-making, which allows outside entities and regulators to take advantage and misregulate body art,” Shaw shares.
Shaw is not one to wait and watch as things go wrong in his industry. Instead, he’s taken it upon himself to change the industry incrementally. Shaw is a community builder, getting tattoo artists and supportive communities to rally together for common goals. He is the co-founder of the Guild of Ethical Tattooists, an educational organization that spends time educating the community about body art’s health and safety concerns. As a co-founder, Shaw oversaw a union of artists and advocated for the much-needed regulations of ethical tattooing practices. The Guild of Ethical Tattooists is an advocacy group for the Board of Body Art Practitioners, the regulatory body that governs the licensure of all body artists in New Mexico.
Ben Shaw and the GET were instrumental in creating the Board of Body Art Practitioners through Senate Bill 275, which they championed through the 2015 legislative sessions in New Mexico. Before its formation, body artists were licensed by the New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists, where Shaw sat as the only tattoo artist. Shaw recognized the immense need for proper regulations specific to the tattoo industry and championed the creation of the Body of Body Art Practitioners. The board monitors the licensure of tattoo artists, guiding expectations of cleanliness and professionalism within the tattoo industry. Shaw retired as chairman of the Board Of Body Art Practitioners in 2019 but currently sits on the Boards rules committee.
He is now active with the Tattoo Smart LaunchPAD, a Members Only platform for vetted tattoo professionals. Shaw currently serves as the Admiral for the Advocacy and Standards group within the LaunchPAD. Ultimately, he’s becoming a tattoo industry advocate, helping artists from around the country and world navigate tattoo regulations and be a voice to stop over-regulation and inspire safe tattooing.
How Entrepreneur Babak Rabiee Entered the Blockchain and Established a Business
Establishing a business that has the potential to expand is a significant accomplishment. The competition in all sectors has grown drastically as many talented entrepreneurs have joined various industries. However, Babak Rabiee, an Iranian entrepreneur, is known for his unique ventures and art collections. He is also a blockchain enthusiast and investor.
Babak is a technical business administration graduate who also earned a nanodegree as a data analyst. His field of study has given him exposure and a strong understanding of the financial markets. This led to Babak investing in Bitcoin back in 2013 while working a full-time job. He spent a lot of time learning through informational YouTube videos, online articles, published books, and professionals.
Babak moved towards cryptocurrency mining and mined over 50 currencies as his knowledge grew. Cryptocurrency mining worked in his favor and helped him pay various day-to-day expenses and even his mortgage. This was a turning point for Babak and led to him setting it up on a larger scale. With his vision, Europe’s first large-scale cryptocurrency mining operation began.
Babak and his team rented a warehouse and added about 100 machines that would mine day and night. This generated a handsome amount of money for Babak to re-invest, and he purchased about 1,000 Binance tokens. This seemed risky at first as the market fluctuated often, but Babak remained patient. He brainstormed a few strategies during this period and eventually moved his business to Dubai.
Dubai was a new beginning and an even more significant opportunity for him to bring Bitcoin and mining to the market. Various other businesses collaborated with him, and payments were moving through Babak’s newly established company in no time. But the hustle didn’t stop there—he then decided to invest in blockchain technology last year and founded Sahara Protocol, a crypto firm.
Babak has also made a name for himself in the world of digital art. He has recently introduced a platform called Lightbulb Man, which helps users not only possess a rare object but also become part of it. Ethereum’s NFT technology has made this possible. Furthermore, users can tie their digital identities to a non-falsifiable art piece.
Babak’s achievements over the years have helped him prove his worth in the industry. He looks forward to assisting the community in experiencing life-changing moments through knowledge. Solving problems and simplifying people’s lives is something he aspires to do while bringing in revenue.
Babak advises others to grab opportunities when they arrive and remain attentive. Staying curious helps you find your path to success. Moreover, your motivation should be more than just earning money. Monetary interests can die, but passion will keep you going in life.
Time and money are the best assets you can have, so it’s important to utilize them properly. Babak has achieved what he dreamt of through dedication, persistence, and remarkable communication skills. Concentrating on your skills instead of dwelling on your shortcomings is the way to go, and Babak’s success has proved that.

Aliyah Dastour Builds a Lucrative Business During a Recession
A recession is a major drop in economic activity and can last for months—or years, in the worst case. Authorities announce a recession when a country’s economy struggles, experiences a negative gross domestic product (GDP), a high level of unemployment, manufacturers make fewer sales, and the nation’s inclusive economic productivity goes down. Recessions are an inevitable share of the business cycle and depend on multiple factors, such as an unexpected economic shock, asset bubbles, too much inflation/deflation, high-tech change, and unwarranted debt.
Aliyah Dastour lost her job during the last recession. Unfortunately, she also lost her marriage as she divorced her husband around the same time. With her growing need to make a living and feed and care for her young daughter, she shifted to Virginia and secured a job in an afterschool program, ‘Casa,’ where she would take care of kids whose parents were working and couldn’t pick them up straight after school. She used to earn $17 per hour, which was not even enough to cover her bills, causing her to illegally bring her daughter to work to cut down on babysitter costs.
Aliyah was a supervisor at Casa for four years and loved her job—she enjoyed the work and loved kids. She needed a camera to take photos of her daughter and saved up $500 to purchase it, eventually buying one off Craigslist. Aliyah would take the camera to work, snap pictures of the kids, forward them to their parents, and print out portraits. This aroused the passion she had for portrait photography since she was a teenager. The kids’ parents were fascinated with her work, would pay her for the pics, and even invite her on location to take more of them—and the rest is history.
Aliyah is now a headshot photographer, has been in business for over a decade, and opened up multiple studios in the Northern Virginia area. She is also helping other photographers do the same. What makes Aliyah’s work unique is that she not only focuses on headshots—she makes her money serving clients while teaching/coaching. “We also focus on our numbers without including physical products to sell like most high ticket photographers, and we offer digital images,” Aliyah states.
Aliyah’s entrepreneurship journey, however, has not been a bed of roses. Luckily, she
worked through it and overcame the challenges. She is quoted saying, “At the beginning of my business, we were living month to month while I was trying to support my family. From having my car repoed to not being able to afford a coffee at networking events to hoping, as it was a holiday weekend, they wouldn’t turn off the electricity since the bill was overdue. I overcame this by trusting in the journey and working from 4 am to 8 pm trying to do it all.”
Aliyah has successfully opened two studios in the DMV area and recently launched a
community project called The Loudoun 100 Project. She has also built a successful business as a studio portrait/headshot photographer and donated over $100K to the community through nonprofits. Aliyah envisions over 1,000 other photographers using the system she has built to help them reach the freedom she finally has in life. She also plans to travel the world building hospitals and orphanages, something she has dreamed of doing since she was a little girl.
