“Employers treat employees like [assets], so why shouldn’t employees do the same?” This question led the CEO and founder of Wade Marketing, Zach Wade, to become a revolutionary expert in job stacking. It is essential to know that job stacking, despite the call for employees to treat employers as an asset, is not unethical, so long as job stackers are mindful of contractual agreements, NDAs, and protecting proprietary information. On this idea, Wade was asked if there are any legal or ethical considerations that digital marketers should know when job stacking. He responded, “Job stacking is 100% legal. When sharing proprietary information, job stackers should be careful about not violating any NDAs they’ve signed. However, it is very rare to be forced to sign an NDA as a digital marketer.” Wade expands the answer to address ethics, specifically highlighting the point for employees to use their employers. He adds that “lots of employers (in the digital space) are known for taking advantage by overworking and underpaying their employees.”
Job stacking allows digital marketers to be their boss (sort of) and maintain a consistent stream of job security. While the idea sounds highly preferable for many, some may be concerned about how job stacking impacts work-life balance. Wade addresses the concern by saying, “Depends on the number of jobs stacked. Most people can handle two or three full-time jobs without impacting their work-life balance. This is possible because digital marketers get paid a base salary as if they were being paid for their time, which is incorrect and makes no sense. This is because they are evaluated on their performance and the results generated from their efforts.” Wade is pointing out that so long as a job stacker has sufficient knowledge, focus, and time management skills, they should be able to work multiple digital jobs simultaneously.
With the notion of working multiple jobs, however, comes the question of burning out or compromising the quality of work. To address this concern, Wade asks, “Can’t anything lead to burnout?” He expands on this by adding, “I wouldn’t recommend job stacking to anyone who doesn’t love what they do. The more you love what you do, the less likely you’ll burn out.” Wade adds that work quality is never compromised because pay depends on performance, so the person will no longer have that job if performance becomes subpar. This not only prevents compromise but instills motivation to do your best work. Wade believes that job stacking is the future of the workforce, particularly in the digital marketing industry. He believes digital marketers should be paid on performance like a salesperson and that while he can’t speak on other industries, job stacking is the future of digital marketing.
