From Hits to Heartache: The Americans on Their New EP “Strays”

The music industry is becoming increasingly saturated in this digital age where trends come and go in a matter of seconds. Amid these fleeting trends, rock and roll has managed to preserve a special place in the heart of listeners. This is where The Americans is grabbing the spotlight, reviving the genre to create music that is familiar yet cutting-edge. The new EP, Strays, by The Americans is already creating some buzz in the industry. Listeners anticipate the band will recreate the magic of their two previous releases in this EP.

The Americans is a recognized band hailing from Los Angeles. This group of musicians showcases a refreshing approach to the tried-and-true genre with unparalleled proficiency. Their latest EP, Strays, is reinventing rock and roll through the prism of early folk and blues that always fascinated the band. Forging a sound that captivates with each note wasn’t easy for The Americans, but Strays did not happen overnight. It is the result of years of hard work to create soul-stirring melodies that will resonate with people from all walks of life. Strays is an EP that’s full of catchy hooks, soulful vocals, and innovative arrangements. The Americans have once again proved themselves to be one of the most exciting and talented bands in the roots music scene.

Patrick Ferris, frontman of The Americans, is the leading vocalist on the EP, and added his charm to the project as a guitarist. Complementing his melodic prowess is Zac Sokolow, with his blazing guitar and rhythmic bass forming the backbone of the project crafted by Jake Faulkner. Together, The Americans have carefully curated an album that finds a place between the iconic sounds of Bruce Springsteen and Nathaniel Rateliff.

The first single, “When You Get Back,” is a heartbreak song about devotion and solitude in the face of unlikely odds. Vocalist Patrick Ferris weaves between a soulful whisper and all-out rocking choruses. He sings mournfully, “You left the life of virtue / To them that might deserve you / And drifted out to sea.” It’s an intimate, emotional opener that sets the tone for the rest of the EP.

“We write our songs inside-out,” says Patrick. “We grab hold of something minuscule and primitive—a simple turn of phrase or an unusual beat—and try to build a song around it. It’s inefficient, but when it works, it works.”

Patrick’s resonant vocals shine again on the hard-hitting second single “Kingdom.” Layered with ripping guitar riffs from Zac and exquisite bass grooves from Jake, the song examines the power of one-way desire. Patrick snarls, “You hold the key to the kingdom / Wrapped ’round your wrist like a weapon.”

The Americans have enjoyed  an impressive journey, with their previous two releases becoming smash hits. Stand True, released in 2022, and I’ll Be Yours” in 2017, propelled the band into the spotlight in Los Angeles. Following this back-to-back success, the band earned appreciation from the esteemed producer T Bone Burnett and acclaimed music journalist, Greil Marcus.

To see The Americans performing on stage is like being transported to a world of melodies. The band never fails to mesmerize audiences in live performances and has appeared in numerous shows that further honed their skills. The musicians deliver straight-up blue-collar rock and roll similar to reliving the charm of legendary performers like Springsteen and John Mellencamp.

Thus far, The Americans have collaborated with many top names from the entertainment industry, such as Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams, and Devendra Banhart. They went on international musical tours with Ryan Bingham and also worked with Jack White and T Bone Burnett, proving their mettle to complement some of the finest talents in the industry. The Americans participated in the PBS primetime series, American Epic, alongside Nas, Elton John, and Alabama Shakes, demonstrating their effort to foster American heritage music.

They are currently on their way to achieving another milestone with the release of Strays on July 21, 2023. The songs were meticulously recorded following a ritual that captures the essence of their music live and unfiltered. This brings raw, heartfelt energy to every note and also adds a touch of originality. “William”, a song from the EP, holds a special place because it took six years to reach its final form. The Americans describe it as the “labor of love”.  It is dedicated to the legendary singer Leadbelly and named his middle name, “William”.

With Strays, The Americans have combined the classic charm of rock and roll with innovative contemporary music. Apart from reflecting their artistic growth, the EP also showcases their undying passion for traditional genres that endured the test of time to continue mesmerizing listeners across generations. With its release, the band invites music enthusiasts on a soul-full rise to a realm of music where rock and roll blends with folks and blues to create timeless melodies that will touch every heart.

From Heartbreak to Summer Jam: Drew Angus’ ‘Broken Heart Last’ Resonate

Summer’s heat often comes with a rollercoaster of emotions. For some, it’s a time of love and adventure; for others, it might dredge up memories of loves lost. Yet, in this melting pot of emotions, Drew Angus and Matt Giella have penned a song that speaks to those very contrasts – “Broken Heart Last,” a track that’s a beautiful mix of classic Americana vibes and energetic pop-rock.

Hailing from the lively streets of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Drew Angus isn’t just another guy with a guitar; he’s a musical chef who knows how to mix different flavors to create something memorable. His songs don’t just offer melodies; they paint vivid pictures. Delve into his music and find yourself on a soulful journey where the old-world charm of Americana meets the upbeat pulse of modern tunes. Drew’s tunes take you back to simpler times, drawing from the classics like Tom Petty and The Beatles while adding contemporary touches that fans of John Mayer or Ben Rector would love.

Yet, to truly understand Drew, one must trace back to his roots. The streets of Bridgeport served as his playground and classroom. It’s where the rhythms of rock legends like The Rolling Stones and the deep storytelling of The Beatles shaped his musical inclinations. This influence is evident in his tunes. Drew’s mantra, “I sing for my supper,” isn’t just a saying; it’s a testament to his unwavering passion.

It’s hard to think that this independent talent, who once swayed to classic anthems in his living room, now shares the limelight with big names like Harry Styles and Nile Rogers. If you’ve ever been to a live performance featuring Drew with legends like Andrea Bocelli or Ann Willson, you’d understand the sheer energy and charisma he brings.

While Drew’s journey is impressive, this summer is all about “Broken Heart Last.” A collaboration with Matt Giella, this track delves into the emotional depths of love’s aftermath. As you sink into the lyrics, an upbeat rhythm lifts your spirit, reminding listeners that heartaches might last, but so does the healing power of music. The song doesn’t just ask how long heartbreak lingers; it offers a remedy – dance. Let the rhythm guide your feet, find release, and celebrate the moment.

Remember the moments when a particular song would trigger challenging memories, but its rhythm would make you dance anyway? That’s the allure of “Broken Heart Last“. Now available on all popular streaming platforms, this song is not just a tune; it’s therapy for anyone nursing the wounds of lost love. As it fills the airwaves this summer, the message is loud and clear: Let go, groove to the memories, and let the rhythm mend your heart.

For those keeping an ear to the ground, Drew Angus isn’t just a passing comet; he’s a force in the musical galaxy. And while “Broken Heart Last” is currently stealing the show, there’s a buzz about more captivating tunes from Drew’s to release later this year.

So, as the sun sets on another day, let Drew Angus’ tunes be your soundtrack, echoing the timeless tussle between love, loss, and the undying spirit to dance again.
