Award-Winning Director, Producer, and Writer, Eva Vik, Opens Up About Her Name Change

One’s name is integral to their identity, reflecting a personal family history and culture. However, the power of our name extends beyond personal identity and can shape how others perceive us. Within the film industry, Hollywood-made surnames have been a common practice, and historically many actors and directors have changed their names to make them more marketable. However, award-winning director, producer, and writer Eva Vik has recently made headlines for taking a different approach to her name. The highly acclaimed creative has decided to change her surname to Vik—her grandmother’s maiden name—to honor her family’s strong women and also to reflect her feminist beliefs. Continue reading to learn more about Vik’s life, her filmmaking career, and the power of names.

The talented Czech filmmaker, whose surname was previously Dolezalova, is known for her critically acclaimed works, such as Serpentine and Raven, which have premiered on multiple platforms, including Mubi, Dazed, Amazon Prime Video, and Vogue. In addition, Vik’s films have featured top-notch actors such as Sean Penn, Suki Waterhouse, Jack Kilmer, Dylan Sprouse, and Barbara Palvin.

In 2021, Forbes named Vik in their prestigious 30 Under 30 feature. Additionally, she often directs Bulgari projects and commercials with stars such as Cailee Spaeny and Barbara Palvin. Vik speaks five languages and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art for a year before discovering her true calling in writing and directing.

Despite her impressive achievements, Vik’s decision to change her name prompted recent headlines. In an interview, she explained that she no longer wanted to comply with the patriarchal tradition of women taking male surnames. Her name change wasn’t an overnight decision, rather, she had been considering the change for a long time but had hesitated due to the idea of being tied to a surname given at birth. In addition, Vik wished to avoid taking on a Hollywood-ized name that meant very little to her.

“The women in my family were strong and self-made, especially my grandmother, whose maiden surname I’ve decided to take on,” states Vik. “From having to hide during WWII, she became a well-respected designer of hats.”

Vik’s decision to change her surname also stems from her relationship with her father. ”Since I never truly related to my surname anyway, I no longer wanted to perpetuate his name, but rather wanted to continue the name clan of the powerful women in my family,” Vik shared.

The forward-looking Vik’s most recent work, the sci-fi body-horror, Serpentine, features a covert snake cult that breaks the genetic code to create a new snake-human interspecies. The film, starring Barbara Palvin, Soo Joo Park, and Luke Brandon Field, was nominated for the X Award at the Tribeca Film Festival 2022 and won the Best Genre Short Film at the Mammoth Film Festival. Raven, a story about a relationship between extraterrestrial intelligence and humanity, was released by Vogue magazine in 2023.

Eva Vik’s decision to change her surname to Vik honors her family’s long line of strong women and reflects her feminist beliefs. With her growing success in the film industry, Vik’s passion for storytelling and dedication to important causes, such as ending violence against women and children, continue to inspire and impact others.

Eva Vik is currently working on her feature film and a limited TV series, Vik also continues her collaboration with Bulgari on a new project set to release in mid-2023.

Valid and Stretch Money share versatile album ‘Bill & Isiah’

Valid and Stretch Money have dropped off their blazing new collaborative album, titled Bill & Isiah. Produced by platinum credited Grammy-Award winning DJ Head of Shady Records, and Grammy-Award winning Anthony Rizzo, Bill & Isiah is ones of the most anticipated albums of the year. It’s a potent, eclectic collection of tracks packed with punchy, stylish production and re-windable bars.

The album plays like an actual basketball game broken down into quarters as well, with each quarter having a significant sound or theme to it. On the first track “89′ Cadillacs”, Valid and Stretch Money introduce themselves to the listener, while on the very next song they re-introduce themselves as the Bad Boys that don’t mind being the villains — they prefer it that way. The next track sounds like an 80’s gangster/action movie, followed up by Game Film that pays homage to classic films from the 80’s.

Songs like “Sentimental” showcase their diversity as songwriters, with a colorful sound palette that contains catchy pop undertones. While “Commentate” provides the hard-hitting sounds and sharp bars that made Griselda iconoclasts. Closer “Like This”, featuring Slot-A, pays homage to classic Detroit sounds with its infectious bass-lines, lively percussion, and charismatic, stylish bars.

Bill & Isiah could certainly be considered one of hip-hop’s most versatile and engaging releases so far this year. Give it a listen below and connect with Valid and Stretch Money on social media platforms to watch for more updates.
