Influencer Marketing Gone Wrong: Campaign Disasters and the Lessons Learned
Influencer marketing campaigns are often seen as a golden ticket to gaining massive exposure and connecting with a younger, more engaged audience. But as the saying goes, not everything that glitters is gold. When these campaigns go wrong, they can backfire in spectacular fashion, leaving brands scrambling to recover from public relations disasters.
That’s where agencies like Clicks Talent come in. They help brands navigate the influencer marketing landscape by ensuring that campaigns are not only effective but also authentic and aligned with the company’s values. With the right guidance, it’s possible to avoid the pitfalls that have caused some of the most talked-about influencer marketing mishaps.
Fyre Festival – When the Hype Was Too Good to Be True

Source: Medium
Back in 2017, social media influencers were paid top dollar to promote an ultra-luxurious, exclusive music festival on a private island in the Bahamas. The campaign was a dream: stunning photos of beaches, yachts, and VIP experiences. Influencers like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Hailey Bieber helped amplify the festival’s brand, making it the talk of the social media world.
What Went Wrong: When attendees arrived, they found a disaster. What was promised as a luxury event turned out to be a chaotic nightmare. The promised villas were actually FEMA-style tents, there was no food (just some sad cheese sandwiches), and the infrastructure was a complete mess. Needless to say, attendees were furious. The influencer-driven hype didn’t match the reality on the ground, leading to massive fallout for the brand and a major lawsuit.
Lesson Learned: Influencer marketing works best when the campaign is grounded in reality. Don’t make promises you can’t deliver. If influencers are hyping up an experience, ensure that your team can actually execute it. Also, when using high-profile influencers, ensure your campaign has the infrastructure to back it up. The disconnect between influencer promotions and the actual product or service will always lead to disaster.
Shein’s Influencer Trip – The Brand Image Crisis

Source: Bloomberg
In 2023, Shein, the fast fashion giant known for its trendy, affordable clothes, invited a group of influencers to its headquarters in China for an exclusive tour. The influencers were shown the company’s “innovation center,” where they were told about Shein’s sustainable practices and forward-thinking design processes. The campaign was meant to shine a positive light on the brand, aligning Shein with eco-consciousness and innovation.
What Went Wrong: Unfortunately, Shein’s influencer campaign didn’t account for the backlash it would face. Shein has been criticized for its labor practices, environmental impact, and questionable manufacturing processes. While the influencers were promoting the brand’s green initiatives, they ignored these glaring issues. This misstep led to accusations of greenwashing and a growing public perception that Shein was attempting to cover up its problematic history.
Lesson Learned: Transparency and authenticity are crucial. In today’s world, consumers are more informed than ever, and they won’t buy into a brand’s narrative if it doesn’t align with their values. Shein’s attempt to promote sustainability while disregarding the broader conversation about labor practices backfired. Brands should be upfront about their challenges and be prepared to have open conversations with their audience. Influencer campaigns should not gloss over sensitive issues, as doing so can erode consumer trust.
Bud Light and Dylan Mulvaney – A Case of Over-Promotion and Backlash

Source: Taggesschau
The Bud Light and Dylan Mulvaney campaign in 2023 is another example of a well-intentioned campaign that quickly turned into a PR nightmare. The campaign aimed to connect with Gen Z and younger Millennial consumers by partnering with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The brand sent Mulvaney personalized cans and she shared her experience with her massive following on social media.
What Went Wrong: The backlash came from conservative and traditional Bud Light drinkers, who felt alienated by the partnership. The situation worsened when Bud Light’s response to the backlash was perceived as weak and indecisive. Instead of doubling down on the inclusivity message, the brand seemed to retreat, further angering both sides. The campaign ended up alienating not only their loyal customer base but also those who wanted to see more support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Lesson Learned: It’s essential to be consistent in your brand values, especially when engaging in sensitive topics. Bud Light’s attempt to market inclusivity backfired because it wasn’t prepared for the intense polarization that came with the campaign. When navigating politically or socially charged topics, brands need to ensure they stand firm in their message and be ready to respond thoughtfully to any backlash. Also, it’s important to choose influencers who truly align with your audience and message, rather than using them purely for shock value or novelty.
How Brands Can Bounce Back
While these influencer marketing failures are cautionary tales, the good news is that brands can bounce back from them.
- Learn from Mistakes: If your campaign falls flat, don’t ignore the fallout. Instead, engage with your audience and acknowledge what went wrong. Consumers appreciate honesty and transparency. Apologize if necessary, and take responsibility for the missteps.
- Rebuild Trust: Once the damage is done, it’s crucial to rebuild trust. Make sure that future campaigns are backed by authenticity. Show your audience that you’re listening to their concerns and taking steps to improve.
- Work with the Right Influencers: The key to success in influencer marketing is authenticity. When selecting influencers, make sure they align with your values, target audience, and brand message. Choose people who genuinely connect with your product and are credible in the eyes of your consumers.
- Don’t Over-Promise: Managing expectations is vital. Avoid making promises or creating hype that you can’t deliver on. Your influencers should be promoting your brand in an authentic way, not just pushing out a sales pitch.
- Stay Transparent: If your brand has challenges or is going through a rough patch, be open about it. Address any controversies head-on rather than sweeping them under the rug. Brands that are transparent and open are more likely to build a loyal customer base.
Influencer marketing is a powerful tool for brands, but it’s not without its risks. Fyre Festival, Shein, and Bud Light all serve as cautionary tales about what can go wrong when expectations are mismanaged or when campaigns aren’t aligned with the brand’s core values. However, these missteps also provide valuable lessons in how to navigate influencer marketing with integrity and authenticity.

Eugene Pallisco Breaks Down Five Wellness Foods That May Not Be as Healthy as You Think
Many foods marketed as “healthy” have developed superfood status on social media, with claims ranging from better gut health to improved energy, weight loss, and longevity. Personal trainer Eugene Pallisco says that while many of these foods can have a place in a healthy diet, their benefits are frequently overstated, and context matters just as much as the ingredient itself.
In many cases, the hesitation has less to do with the food itself and more to do with portion size, nutrient quality, processing, cost, or whether the scientific evidence matches the marketing. Here are five popular wellness foods that some nutrition coaches approach with caution.
-
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are nutrient-dense, but they are sometimes overrated for people focused on increasing protein intake. Although they contain about 17 g of protein per 100 g, a typical serving of 1 to 2 tablespoons provides only around 2 to 4 g.
Chia seeds can reduce the absorption of minerals including iron, zinc, and calcium. While this is rarely an issue for people eating a varied diet, coaches working with clients who have mineral deficiencies may recommend other foods.
Their exceptionally high fiber content can also cause bloating, gas, or constipation in people with sensitive digestive systems or those who suddenly increase their fiber intake. At roughly 140 calories per two tablespoons, chia seeds can also contribute more calories than many people realize.
“Healthy foods still count toward your daily calorie intake,” says Pallisco. “It’s important to look at the full nutritional picture rather than assuming every superfood deserves unlimited portions.”
-
Sea Moss
Sea moss has become one of the wellness industry’s most talked-about products, yet high-quality human research remains limited.
Although it contains vitamins, minerals, and fiber, there is little evidence showing it provides benefits beyond those of a balanced diet. Its iodine content can also vary substantially depending on where it is harvested, potentially posing concerns for people with thyroid conditions.
Sea moss may also absorb heavy metals and other contaminants from ocean environments, making sourcing and third-party testing important considerations.
Many online claims involving immunity, gut health, hormone balance, energy, and weight loss remain unsupported by robust clinical research.
-
Plant-Based Milk
Plant-based milks can be excellent alternatives to dairy, but their nutritional value differs considerably between products.
Many almond, oat, rice, and coconut milks contain just 1 to 3 g of protein per serving, compared with approximately 8 g in cow’s milk. Soy milk is the primary exception, offering a similar protein content.
Many products also contain added sugars, while others include gums, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and oils to improve texture and shelf life. For this reason, nutrition coaches commonly recommend choosing unsweetened, minimally processed varieties whenever possible.
-
Store-Bought Bone Broth
Bone broth has earned a reputation as a wellness staple, but commercial products vary significantly in quality.
Some contain only a few grams of protein despite being marketed as collagen-rich. Sodium is another consideration, with many brands providing between 400 and 900 mg per serving. Others rely on concentrates, flavorings, and additives rather than traditional slow-simmering methods.
Pallisco notes that “Research supporting claims that bone broth directly improves joint health, skin, or gut health also remains limited, with much of the available evidence focusing on collagen supplements instead.”
-
Coconut Cult
Coconut Cult has attracted attention because of its probiotic content, but nutrition coaches encourage realistic expectations.
Each serving is relatively high in saturated fat from coconut, making portion size important for people monitoring cholesterol levels. Although the product contains multiple probiotic strains, research on the product itself is limited, and probiotic effects depend on the specific strain, dose, and individual.
Some people may also experience bloating or digestive discomfort when introducing highly concentrated probiotic foods too quickly.
“Pursuing better nutrition doesn’t require chasing every trend,” Eugene Pallisco says. “Consistency with balanced eating habits will almost always deliver better long-term results than relying on any single food.”
Eugene Pallisco Explains The Bottom Line on “Healthy” Foods
None of these foods are inherently unhealthy, and most can absolutely fit into a balanced diet.
The reason some nutrition coaches are cautious is usually because of portion size, nutrient density, product quality, marketing claims, or how well a food aligns with an individual’s health goals.
Rather than labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” evidence-based nutrition focuses on the overall dietary pattern.
A diet built around a variety of whole, minimally processed foods will almost always have a greater impact on long-term health than any single trendy ingredient or superfood.

Book
He Never Said Goodbye. He Just Stopped Coming Home.
Some love stories don’t end. They just change where they live.
The Day Everything Went Quiet
In Letters to Tommi by Ryan Tate, a man comes upstairs to wake his partner for dinner. He finds him there, on the bed, still. No warning. No goodbye. Just the ordinary cruelty of a Tuesday afternoon that became the worst day of his life. Tommi — warm, funny, tall, Finnish, the man who hid little blue Post-it notes in jacket pockets and coat linings for Ryan to find — was gone. A cardiac arrest. Instant. And Ryan was left standing in a silence that has no name.
What do you do with a love that has nowhere to land?
He Kept Texting Him Anyway
Most people would have deleted the number. Ryan kept texting it.
“Hey Tom Tom, I can’t think what to cook for dinner, the kitchen was always your domain, any ideas?”
He knew there would be no reply. He said so himself: brain freeze, natural instinct, or hoping? But the instinct to reach for Tommi never switched off, because love doesn’t come with an off switch. Not the real kind.
Ryan slept three days on his side of the bed, three days on Tommi’s, one day in the middle. He kept buying daffodils because they reminded Tommi of spring. He still wore the white gold chain Tommi placed in his hand on a bridge on a cold winter night, when he asked Ryan to be his husband. He said it would never leave him. It hasn’t.
This is what Letters to Tommi understands that most books about grief get completely wrong. Love doesn’t end at death. It just loses its address.
Stop Telling Grieving People to Move On
Ryan’s friends meant well. They always do.
“Time will make it easier.” “You need to start living again.” “You were single before and fine.”
He forwarded every single one of those messages to Tommi’s phone. With barely disguised fury.
Because here is what nobody tells you about losing someone you were genuinely, completely, all-in in love with. The grief doesn’t move in stages. It moves like weather. Some mornings, he cleaned all eight rooms of the house to Tommi’s standard and felt almost steady. Some Friday nights, he sat alone with red wine and a Chinese takeaway for one and felt the darkness press in from every corner. Some nights, he wrote letters at 2am. Some nights, he found a hidden Post-it note in Finnish in his coat pocket and translated it with shaking fingers.
None of that is dysfunction. All of that is love, still doing what love does. Showing up, even when the person is gone.
The Truth This Book Tells
Letters to Tommi by Ryan Tate is not a self-help book. It has no five-step plan. It doesn’t promise you’ll be fine by spring.
What it does is sit beside you. The way Tommi used to sit beside Ryan, without fixing anything, without needing big words, just present. Just there.
Ryan wrote these letters for two reasons. To help others walking the same road. And to make sure the world doesn’t forget a big-eyed, glasses-wearing, sauna-loving, wardrobe-raiding Finnish man who made every room feel warmer just by being in it.
He succeeded on both counts.
If you have ever loved someone so completely that losing them broke something in you that hasn’t healed quite right, this book was written for you.
Some loves don’t fade with time. They just change where they live.

Entertainment
Keyla Wood and the Power of Playing by Her Own Rules
There is a particular kind of power in Hollywood that has very little to do with being the loudest person in the room. It comes from longevity, relationships, adaptability and understanding how culture moves before everyone else catches up. Keyla Wood has built her career around exactly that kind of power.
For decades, Keyla has lived inside entertainment as an actress, but her place in the industry has grown considerably beyond the roles she plays. From a substantial television career in Mexico to her work in American film, television and streaming productions, she has navigated two entertainment cultures while building an identity that belongs comfortably to both. Los Angeles became more than the city where she continued acting; it became the place where the different dimensions of her career began to converge.

Keyla Wood is part of a changing Hollywood in which cultural relevance is no longer defined by one job title. She acts, produces, develops projects, creates media, works with brands and has built TheWoodPr into an international public relations and image company. These are not side businesses surrounding an acting career. Together, they explain how she has learned to operate in an industry where talent may get someone into the room, but understanding people, perception and opportunity determines how long they remain there.
That perspective has also given Keyla influence beyond her own image. Through TheWoodPr, she has spent more than fifteen years positioning other actors, filmmakers, entrepreneurs, executives and companies, taking the same understanding of visibility that has shaped her own career and applying it to people with entirely different ambitions. Her professional world now moves naturally between Hollywood sets, business meetings, media, fashion, international relationships and cultural initiatives connecting Los Angeles with Mexico, Latin America, Europe and Dubai.

Perhaps that is what makes Keyla Wood particularly representative of Hollywood right now. She belongs to a generation that entered entertainment before followers, algorithms and personal brands became part of the vocabulary, yet she has successfully adapted to an industry increasingly driven by all three. She understands the traditional machinery of entertainment, but she also understands that today’s public figure can no longer depend entirely on that machinery. Keyla has consequently created her own.
Her acting continues. Her producing ambitions are expanding. TheWoodPr continues developing internationally. Her relationships within international media and entertainment have placed her in a position to amplify stories beyond her own, while her presence in Los Angeles keeps her connected to the constantly shifting intersection of entertainment, entrepreneurship and culture.

None of this happened overnight, and perhaps that is precisely the point.
Hollywood spends enormous energy searching for what is next. Keyla Wood’s story represents something different: the power of continuing to evolve until the industry has to reconsider what you are capable of becoming.
She is not simply maintaining a career. She is using everything that career has taught her to create the next version of it—and increasingly, to create opportunities for others along the way.
