Each year, the illegal child sex trafficking trade generates over $100B, ensnaring its victims in every country around the world. The independent film Sound of Freedom, starring Jim Caviezel, is pulling back the curtain on the enslavement of children and finding massive success at the global box office. Inspired by a real-life government agent who quits his job to save a young girl from Colombian sex traffickers, the movie has earned over $175MM in ticket sales in the United States alone and attracted the endorsement of Donald Trump, among many other celebrities. Executive producer Jason Shurka, also known as Mr. UNIFYD, is the founder of UNIFYD Healing and UNIFYD TV, and he gives his perspective on why Sound of Freedom is resonating with audiences and UNIFYD World is committed to funding similar movies with its members’ contributions.
“At UNIFYD World, we are appalled by the child sex trafficking trade, and we feel an absolute obligation to do whatever we can to put a stop to it,” says Shurka. “When I was asked to become the executive producer for Sound of Freedom, it was an easy decision. It aligned perfectly with the mission of UNIFYD World. We were honored that we could contribute our time and resources to the release of such an important film.”
Sound of Freedom is based on the actions of Tim Ballard, who left the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to found Operation Underground Railroad, an anti-sex trafficking nonprofit. The film shows Ballard’s efforts to free a child from Colombian traffickers.
Shurka reveals that while it was difficult to deal with all the backlash the mainstream media brought towards the film, he was inspired to stay on his mission to raise awareness for this cause, no matter the consequence. The vision and determination to shed light on a crucial worldwide issue helped the movie to be made. Shurka is also happy that both UNIFYD World and EESystem could help significantly fund Sound of Freedom through the support that both organizations receive from humanity as a whole. “We’ve sold over 15 million tickets, and that is just in the United States alone,” he says.
While Shurka is grateful for the efforts of law enforcement officials and people like Ballard, he believes that more must be done to rescue children from sex trafficking. Hope and safety for victims begin with people facing the dark reality that this is occurring even though it is painful to acknowledge.
“Through awareness, we the people have the power to change the problem”, Shurka says. “It’s like the 12-step program. Step 1 is admitting we have a problem. From there, we can find the solution”, he concludes.
Shurka’s road to using his skills and resources to unify humanity and impact social causes on a global level began with his own personal transformation. Between 2011-2015, he suffered through a cascade of physical traumas, including his shoulder dislocating twenty-three times, necessitating three surgeries, and a staph infection in his left leg that almost cost him his limb and his life.
Throughout his recovery in the hospital and at home, Shurka pondered the inevitable question: why me? Looking back on those times now, he believes the universe was attempting to awaken him to his inner light and dissolve the darkness within him. They were, in effect, wake-up calls that set him on a new journey, one that would lead him to found the UNIFYD World organization.
“I was also the Vice President of an international commercial real estate company, and while I worked with incredible people, it didn’t speak to me,” Shurka recalls. “It didn’t fulfill me, so I decided to use all the skills I had developed in business and use them to help the world come together in a new way.”
