From Start to Stardom: Getting to Know Comedy’s Rising Star, Priest Douglas

When it comes to the US entertainment industry, few comedians have managed to make a lasting impact on the scene as much as Priest Douglas. Priest has quickly cemented his spot with his shows attracting massive attention offline and online. He was featured in several top publications, including Hustle Weekly and US Times. Priest Douglas also opened for notable names in the industry, including TK Kirkland, Michael Blackston, Tommy Davison, and DC Young Fly, with many praising his style.

Priest specializes mainly in storytelling, enabling him to keep the crowd’s attention. He uses comedy to spread joy and love to encourage the audience.

Priest’s journey hasn’t been the easiest. He faced many challenges, from the brutal competition in the industry to people telling him he could not tell certain jokes because he should not be funnier than the headliner and losing everything after a toxic relationship.

Priest fell in love with the wrong person and spent almost 42 years in prison due to a lie. All this took a huge toll on his mental health and profoundly affected his career.

Priest was just getting started in the entertainment industry, and when this happened, he had to take a step back. He felt like he lost everything and saw no need to fight for his passion.

Looking back, Priest says he is grateful that he had people by his side who reminded him why he started and helped him find his way back up. “Having God in my corner, as well as my supportive family, got me through all this, and I was cleared of all the charges,” Priest says.

He hopes to help others through comedy as he shows other young minds that nothing is impossible, and no matter what life throws at you, if you fall, don’t stay on the ground, get up, and keep pushing.

“Life is full of challenges, and sometimes, not everything works in your favor. But you don’t have to let the current situation determine your life and future. You can get past this and reach your goals,” Priest adds.

While it was hard, Priest didn’t give up. He invested in his dream once more and is now one of the fastest-rising comedians in the country. He has had several shows and performed alongside big names in the industry. Priest also caught the media’s attention, with top publications recognizing his unique style.

He says his goal is to do more shows in the coming years and hopefully inspire and empower youths to fight for their goals. In a few years, Priest sees himself in a movie or a lineup with other big-name celebrities and not just opening up for them.

His advice to young people is to be patient, invest in their goals, and not let other people’s opinions dictate their lives. “Dr. Martin Luther King once said, ‘Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.’ I think this is one of the best drivers in life and has greatly helped me. It keeps my mind at ease because I was once that person who held on to grudges, which affected my growth,” Priest concludes.

Min Dai: The Innovative Film Producer Making a Mark in US Entertainment

The US media and entertainment industry continues to grow remarkably as viewers and content creators troop in their numbers to streaming platforms, raising the demand for quality content. However, it becomes nearly impossible to discuss this growth without referring to celebrated producer and post-production supervisor Min Dai. Min is one of the creatives behind some top documentaries and shows today, including “Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey.” The Netflix documentary miniseries has received critically acclaimed reviews worldwide and reached 720 million minute views.

Min Dai has also worked on “2nd Chance” and “Year One: A Political Odyssey,” a film about President Joe Biden’s first year of presidency. Min acted as the liaison between the production and editorial teams on “Year One.” Making sure the edit was going smoothly while filming as well as meeting the HBO deadlines. Post-production budgeting/post-production crew positions hiring, as well as safeguarding the creative process of the project, was her priority. She worked alongside director John Maggio in many editing and coloring sessions. Min also worked on Detective Chinatown 2,” where she was the assistant producer, liaison, and point person between the Chinese crew and the U.S. team. “Detective Chinatown 2” was the first co-production between the Chinese film production with U.S. Unions and placed her on the international radar.

Her passion, professionalism, creativity, and fastidiousness have helped her close and cement a spot in a brutally competitive industry and afforded her avenues to collaborate with legends in the field. “I devote myself fully to the projects I’m on and find ways to contribute and elevate them to the best of my ability. After every project I’ve participated in, I’m able to gain more insight and apply it to the next one. I think to me, that’s a very important skill,” says Min. Nevertheless, her journey hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing.

Min was raised in Beijing, China, where she discovered her passion for production. Her parents were scholars, and she often found herself alone as a child. She was looking into activities to help her pass the time when she discovered her parents’ extensive DVD collection. Min would spend her free time watching movies, but what enticed her the most was the behind-the-scenes. She wanted to know what goes on behind the camera and began her research and journey. Min worked in film and television in Beijing for several years before the big move to NYC.

While she enjoyed working in China, Min wanted an industry that would challenge her and provide more opportunities. “The US market, on the one hand, is extremely competitive; however, it holds numerous opportunities. Moreover, the talents are the best in the world; given this, breaking into the US market as a producer or an actor/actress might be the big move you need in your career—one substantial enough to take you to an entirely new level,” says Min.

In 2017, Min moved to the US to continue her career in film, and shortly after, she landed one of her very first roles in “Detective Chinatown 2.” But the transition was challenging.

Min notes that she often feels like she is labeled as a “Chinese filmmaker,” “foreigner,” or “the woman with a funny accent.” These boxes often translate to “not a worthy collaborator”; in most cases, Min has to work twice as hard to prove herself. But she is glad she has people who recognize her for her skills and choose to invest in her. This is, therefore, an aspect she desires to smoothen over with young immigrant filmmakers.

Min Dai has worked with notable names in the media and entertainment industry, including Emmy-nominated host Darley Newman on “Travels with Darley,” director Rachel Dretzin on “Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey” and Emmy-Winning director John Maggio on his feature documentary “Year One: A Political Odyssey.” Min Dai is currently slated to run post-production for WME-represented company Vespucci Group on their upcoming documentary projects in 2023.
